Bobwhite have been called “winged rockets.” That is because when flushed, they explode from the brush with chaotic and dizzying speed that makes them a formidable target for predator and wingshooter alike. Built for survival, their color of dappled browns and a salt and pepper mix of black and white makes for excellence camouflage in the parched grasses that grow along the 100th Meridian. Only six inches tall and six ounces in weight their ability to hide and the quick burst of speed when airborne is the only defense they have. Surprisingly though, that’s all they need. A bobwhite can become airborne and fly away so quickly, they make even the most experienced wingshooter look like an amateur. |
