Turkey Chicks rule... |
What they lack in experience, they make up for it with sheer exuberance. Four girls, ready for the promise of action that the scrub country of northwest Texas holds, dive headlong into an experience that will exhilarate them and build memories that last a lifetime. |
The first meeting is a dress rehearsal. The girls had never worn camouflage before much less worked a turkey call. So getting acquainted with the gear is a must. |

Girls this smart are naturals at something new like turkey hunting. In the group, there is one valedictorian, two who will graduate in the top ten of their class, and the third, a junior in high school will probably graduate as the top student in her class. So there is lot of brainpower and they pick up on the nuances of turkey hunting in a snap. |
The day of the hunt, conversation was tinged with excitement. Once out of the truck, turkeys gobbled less than 150 yards away. Due to an extended drought, Texas turkey hunting was tough in 2006 and the birds wouldn't come to a call. |
Setting up on a travel corridor in a ground blind, the wait was on for a turkey to sidle past. |

It wasn't long before a wary tom cruised into the area. He is cagey and peeks in and out of the brush for fifteen minutes. When a few hens sidle by, the tom's attention is diverted and he leaves. |

Disappointed, we wait and soon, the top returns following the same hens in which he first left. |
A couple of tense minutes later, the turkey stands in the open—his iridescence ablaze in the evening sun. |

A shot is fired and a turkey falls. |
